Photo Gallery of varieties and errors

SO MANY STAMPS FROM SO MANY COUNTRIES HAVE MIS-PRINTS OR VARIETIES.  SOME ARE JUST HUMAN ERRORS, e.g. MISALLIGNING SHEETS, SOME ARE GRAPHIC ERRORS e.g. MONACO 50c FDR WITH 5 FINGERS!! THEN THERE ARE POST-MARKS, WATER-MARKS, 1ST.DAY COVERS, PERFIINS, PRECANCELS, SURCHARGES, ALMOST AD INFINITUM.

WHAT DICTIONARY WAS USED????

tYPO PROBABLY???

PERFIN IBHL

SG # 46  cv$500 +/-.  perfins and also 'officials' were used to try and prevent unauthourised use.  Many collectors just save them.

HIGH VALUES 1893-4

YOU CAN SEE WHY POSTMARKS ARE SOMETIMES CALLED 'OBLITERATIONS'.  IT IS RELATIVELY EASY TO"BLUE" PAPER SO UNLESS I WANT TO PAY TO HAVE IT VALUED.....

SOMETIMES THE SCAN IS NOT ACCURATE AND ONE CAN TAKE ONE'S CHANCES AT GETTING ANOTHER COLOUR VARIATION.

COLOUR SHIFT

UPWARD SHIFT OF RED LINES.  NO MENTION IN SG CONCISE

SOME ERRORS AREN'T CATALOGED

I SHOWED THIS TO A COUPLE OF STAMP CLUBS AND THEY HAD NEVER SEEN/HEARD OF ONE

IVORY HEADS

ONLY FOUND ON 'BLUED' PAPER THE BACK OF SOME 1d REDS AND 2d BLUES HAVE THE QUEEN'S HEAD APPEARING AS WHITE/IVORY.

EARLY CANCELS

THE SMUDGY ONES ARE STAMPED WITH  CORK DESIGN.  THE CLEARER, LIKE THE "TAGET" ARE DONE WITH A METAL HAND STAMP AND ARE OFTEN REFERRED TO AS "SON", SOCKED ON NOSE.( "R" is registered mail)

PRE-CANCELS

PRE-CANCELS WERE A METHOD BY WHICH GOVERNMENTS COULD TRY AND STOP THE MISUSE OF PUBLIC FUNDS.  PERFINS, ALREADY DISCUSSED, WERE ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO STOP 'THEFT'.

FIRST DAY COVER (FDC)

A SPECIAL ENVELOPE (CACHET) WAS SOLD EITHER BY THE POSTAL SERVICE OR BY A PRIVATE DESIGNER TO COMMEMORATE THE 1st. DAY OF ISSUE OF A NEW STAMP.  YOU COULD HAVE THEM SENT TO YOU OR BUY THEM UN-ADDRESSED.

SOME PRINTINGS HAVE MANY ERRORS

AS YOU CAN SEE, I NEEDED A 'TORN FLAG' VARIETY.  FOR A LOT OF THE OTHERS, ONE PROBABLY NEEDS GOOD LIGHT OR A MAGNIFIER FOR THE'OPEN WINDOW. FLYING SAUCER, ETC.

THE 'BROKEN CHIN STRAP' IS THE EASIEST TO SEE AND THE MOST COMMON. "BLANK" FOUND, A 'TORN FLAG'  (SEE 'NEWEST FIND 3)

COMMON CANADIAN VARIETIES

EASY TO SEE WITH THE NAKED EYE.

DISPLAY IDEA FOR SPECIAL INTEREST

AS A LOYALIST I ALSO MAKE SPECIAL PAGES FOR ROYAL VISITS.  THE 1st. DAY COVERS ARE SOMETIMES DIFFICULT TO FIND. SO I HAVE NOT FINSHED.

PERF. SHIFT DIE 1 SG# 20

THIS IS A MIS-PERF.  THE 16 PERF WAS DROPPED AS IT TORE TOO EASILY BUT WAS USED CONCURRENTLY WITH THE 14 PERF.

I HAVE ONLY COVERED THE BASICS

I AM SURE THERE ARE MANY UNANSWERED FAQ's, BUT I ONLY WANTED TO PIQUE INTEREST IN THE HOBBY THAT CAN LAST A LIFE-TIME.  PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK ME OR USE ANY ILLUSTRATIONS YOU WANT.  I INCLUDED "MY LIFE" AS AN EPITAPH AND TO ENSURE I KEEP THIS UP-TO-DATElaughing
